Moroccan Beni Ourain Rugs

If you love traditional style rugs, we believe that Beni Ourain rugs can give you the comfort and good taste that you’re looking for. These traditional rugs are 100% non-dyed and entirely made of wool. They are the real definition of luxury and warmth.

All Beni Ourain rugs often feature geometric patterns that mimic the rich and vibrant colours uniquely found in stained glass windows, like those in churches. Because of this, they are perfect for accenting architecture and contemporary interiors.

Our Beni Ourain rugs are made by people who incorporate fragments of their lives in the designs. These designs usually express femininity and nature, fertility or birth. We have also seen some stories of personal beliefs or rural life emerging from the carpets.

History of the Beni Ouarain Rugs

Beni Ourain rugs are a household accessory that is traditionally hand crafted by the Beni Ourain tribes. The Beni Ourain tribes are a mixture of several barber tribes (about 17) that historically used to live in the Atlas Mountain of Morocco, although others relocated to the lowlands for practicing farming.

While in the mountains, the Beni Ourain tribes do sheep farming which leads to the production of high-grade wool. The wool is then used in handcrafting unique and beautiful rugs. Whereas some tribes in Morocco have a colour preference, natural dyes such as cochineal, iron sulphate, indigo, almond leaves and henna were primarily used in beautifying the rugs till the late 20th century. Our modern Beni rugs are often mixed with bold colours, such as blacks, browns, greens, yellows, blues, oranges and reds.

These Moroccan kilim and Berber mats were primarily woven by women. During the mid-century, designers started adding some sophistication to the mats using authentic vintage. The designers, mostly women, also began to incorporate certain design elements that reflected their personal experience on the rug designs. The designs, therefore, feature rural life, femininity, nature, fertility, birth, and spirituality.

The Beni Ouarain rugs traditionally feature brown or black geometric lines, which form diamond or abstract shapes on a whitish or cream background. Most of the rugs lack a border and only a few have a fringe on one end.

The Moroccan rugs mostly tell a story of the weaver’s life or of the tribal ancestors in combination with tribal superstitions, such as the rugs being able to wade off evil spirits, as elements of good luck, for welfare and happiness, amongst other beliefs of the tribe.

Our Moroccan Beni Ourain Rugs are a masterpiece with unique artwork that will beautify your home for a long time. We believe that you can pass the rug down for generations if you’re able to properly care for it, since the high-quality wool will never wear out nor the colours will fade.

Beni Ourain Rugs Made from a Special Sheep

The sheep whose wool we use in making the Beni Ourain rugs are bred in the Atlas Mountains. They are an ancient breed whose whole quality is unmatchable to others due to the special climatic conditions and natural food in the mountains. The sheep are left to roam the rugged Middle Atlas Mountains making them form natural immunity to disease that could deter the quality of their wool.

Authentic, natural and a piece of the Moroccan Soul
